Basic Level:
Given a dowel
perform an action that showcases to the audience what the dowel has transformed into.
ie. Use the Dowel like a Bow and Arrow.
Advanced Level:
Given a dowel decide what action you will do with the dowel to transform the stick into something other than a dowel.
i.e. - The Handle Of A TNT Explosives Detonator. Build a short "etude" scene around the action.
I.e. - Two characters are gold mining. The lay out the chord in pantomime. Push down on the "handle" (the stick used as the handle to the TNT explosives detonator) and it blows them back. OR add the idea it doesn't go off and one goes to check on the connection and yells from the mine- "try it again" (or something similar) and it blows and the guy walks back and says "Yup, it's working now."
But the key is that all of the idea for the Etude is created / stacked / stems from the choice of what the "Magic Stick" dowel will be.
WHAT:
A Character Costume Prop is something that is unique and fitting to a character specifically. It can be ordinary like an umbrella but in the case of Mary Poppins, It has magic and is used in a way for whimsy and magic. It is still just an umbrella, but the way she uses it helps us understand Mary Poppins. It could be a stop watch like the White Rabbit. It shows his values, conflict, context, and can help an actor physicalize nervousness by possibly checking it several times and then again... and then... wait.... wait... checks it again.
